Wimbledon 2026 is about to begin & Sky Sports Tennis presenter Gigi Salmon highlights the fact that British hope Jack Draper’s one of the home players facing stiff competition in his opening round as he begins against a tough opponent. Salmon believes the tournament will serve up two weeks of top shelf tennis, but admitted that the draw “could have been kinder” to the 24-year-old playing country’s biggest hope against American sixth seed Taylor Fritz in a blockbuster first-round match.
Draper arrives at Wimbledon after missing a number of months on the ATP Tour due to injury. The British left-hander has had little match practice going into the year’s third Grand Slam, although he returned to competitive action recently at Eastbourne. It’s a big ask to be drawn against one of the tournament’s top seeds in round one, but it’s also an opportunity for Draper to announce himself on home turf.
The All England Club has a history of surprises but the draw was not by any means favourable to Britain’s favourite men’s hope, according to Salmon. Dealt a daunting task, many fans were hoping his route to the last eight would prove easier after Taylor Fritz has turned himself into one of the best grass court players in recent seasons. However, Salmon believes that home support may be able to inspire the Briton to up his game for a fight many are eagerly anticipating.
Another highlight of local interest in the first week is 21 Britons – a record number – contesting the singles draws as men and women. Emma Raducanu, as well as Cameron Norrie, Katie Boulter and assorted British wildcards, will all be hoping for some momentum from the Wimbledon faithful. There are one or two pretty tough first-round fixtures, but Salmon believes it should be another enjoyable championship for British tennis fans.
And outside of the British challengers, how about that return of Serena Williams as part of the women’s draw – her name tops perhaps all others in the tournament build-up. Defending champion Jannik Sinner leads a talented men’s field at the Shanghai Masters, also featuring Grand Slam champions Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev among others, where injuries will again have an outsize impact as several elite players look to step up in their rivals’ absence.
Salmon was also keen to point out that Wimbledon seldom follows script with early round shock upsets an ever more familiar theme in recent years. Despite the established stars on show, she still believes there are no such certainties – in either the men’s or women’s competitions – with so many potential challengers for a deep run this fortnight.
On that front, Draper is currently trying to shake off the distractions of his tough opening match and to show he still has what it takes to compete with the best in a season rocked by injury. A win over Fritz would immediately register as one of the best results of the first round, and could very well be what Carreño Busta needs for a deep Wimbledon run.
With the iconic grass courts at the All England Club set to play host to yet another unforgettable championship, fans are in store for exciting matches, emotional moments and plenty of drama. Jack Draper‘s route is arguably one of the more difficult for a British player but Wimbledon has produced memorable tales over the years; perhaps this is another?
