Rangers have continued to bolster their squad by agreeing a deal for experienced centre-back and captain Robin Pröpper from Dutch club FC Twente. And the 30-year-old is set to fly into Glasgow today to undergo his medical before completing a move which will see him become Philippe Clement’s latest signing in an Ibrox rebuilding job.
The defender move is another demonstration of their commitment to strengthening the back-line as they prepare for a return to action in the Scottish Premiership this season. Due to his leadership, calmness on the ball and ability to organise the back line, Pröpper has earned a reputation as one of the league’s best defenders. His arrival would add a it of experience to a Rangers team that has undergone significant change during the summer transfer window.
From there, Pröpper went to FC Twente in 2021 and rapidly became one of the most important players in his club. He enjoyed a standout season, making 39 appearances in all competitions last year as captain of the Dutch side. The centre-back’s regularity, coupled with his leadership on the pitch, saw him a target for many clubs in Europe – but Rangers have won the race for his signature.
And the Dutch defender is expected to be Gers’ silly-season ninth as Philippe Clement puts his stamp on a squad. So far, the Glasgow club have brought in Václav Černý, Hamza Igamane, Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Liam Kelly, Connor Barron and Oscar Cortés – with a loan deal for Mohamed Diomande being made permanent. The desire to win domestically and do better in Europe is why the club has used an aggressive recruitment strategy.
The transfer also follows hot on the heels of striker Sam Lammers completing a loan move in the opposite direction to FC Twente. The likes of Connor Goldson, Robby McCrorie, Borna Barišić, Ryan Jack, John Lundstram and John McLaughlin, as well as Kemar Roofe, have all left Rangers this summer. The changes have allowed Clement to assemble a squad that better reflects his tactical blueprint.
Philippe Clement addressed the club’s ambitions for the longer term after recent success, but admitted Rangers are still on a big rebuilding job. Speaking to Club TV, the Belgian coach said: “We must be patient, very patient and adapt our plans accordingly as we are bringing in a lot of players. The addition of a player like Pröpper, with all his experience, is seen as another crucial piece in realising that goal.
Once Pröpper passes his medical tests and signs the final paperwork, supporters will now wait for official confirmation. Assuming everything goes as intended, the Dutch defender may make his bow in pre-season days after linking up with the squad.
Rangers remained active in the transfer window this week as the Scottish Premiership season draws ever closer to kick off. Not only will Robin Pröpper fill a gaping hole in the club’s defence, he will also bring leadership, experience and stability to a team that must now balance its efforts across several competitions next season.
